Summary: Build confidence in your grip by shooting tight groups without using a sight picture. The key is constant wrist camming and grip pressure – once set, do not change it with the shot, and then calmly letting recoil happen.
Target: Blank piece of paper
Rounds: 40
Dry Variant: None – must be done live
Start Position: On target
Procedure:
1. 4 to 7 yards (based on skill)
2. 8 strings of 5 shots
3. each string is done purposely, no more than 1 shot per second, better if longer
4. Rise to the target, building all grip pressures in the hand, wrist and elbows (see below for notes on this).
5. Lower the gun below your vision, look at the slide, not sights or target
6. With care release 5 shots, no more than one shot per second, keeping ALL pressures the same, moving ONLY the trigger finger
7. Rebuild stance, natural point of aim, and grip for each string
8. You should end up with a fist sized or smaller group from each string (separate locations are fine). This confirms your muzzle flip is minimal and returning, and also that you are maintaining constant pressures through shots (not adding pressure with shot and altering where the gun is pointing).
Notes:
Stay passive and do not react to the shot (including blinking). Trust that the firm and constant grip with wrist cam will recover the gun more or less on the same spot, even without visual confirmation of a proper sight picture.
Goals:
See the efficiency of constant, passive control by creating small groups on the target without sight confirmation – completely by feel.
Learn to trust their grip.
What to think about:
Build Proper grip + stance, then stay still and passive as you shoot.
Key Points:
1st key point – good friction, firm grip
2nd key point – constant wrist cam
3rd key point – stiffen elbows
4th key point – only trigger finger moves
Variant:
You or a partner count slowly 10 before each shot. This gives you about 1 minute of holding grip pressures per string. Soon it becomes natural to hold constant pressures and only move the trigger finger to release the shot.
Things to watch out for:
1. Don’t worry about where the holes go – just that each string forms a tight group.
2. Remember other fundamentals…. reset your trigger during recoil to avoid burning in a late (slow) habit of pinning.
